Six Square: Cultivating Emerging Artists

This summer, Six Square is proud to present a new music series named Musical Explorations featuring new artists of color who specialize in performing urban music genres.

The series kicks off this Tuesday, June 12th, and every second Tuesday of the month until August 14th in the African American Cultural Heritage Center Courtyard, located at 912 E 11th St in East Austin from 6pm-8pm. Noted musical styles include jazz, blues, R&B, neosoul, and hip-hop.

The full artist schedule for this Tuesday includes Atlanta artist Baby Rose, Austin favorites The Peterson Brothers, and Blue Moon from San Marcos. The concert is free to attend with an RSVP and everyone is encouraged to bring a suggested donation of at least $7 to help with the operation cost of the series.

The current program director, Keyheira Keys, is confident that Six Square has become an “integral community organization by providing opportunities to artists of color and facilitating the promotion of Black cultural arts.”

There are plans to expand the summer music series to include more diverse genres and increase the number of participating artists. Keys also designed the program to “cultivate music career experiences for emerging artists” by pairing them with more those more established or touring so they can network and exchange best practices.

Six Square was formed to preserve the Black arts and culture engrained in the six square miles located in East Austin historically meant to solidify racial segregation. The Musical Exploration summer series is just one of the many opportunities provided by Six Square for Black art and culture to thrive in Austin.

They will continue to provide amazing business opportunities for those who have made a career in art as they continue to receive support from the community and the artists that benefit from their platform.

If you are ready to make your art a business, you should definitely contact Six Square for assistance on Facebook or their official website, as they are accepting applications from artists of color age 18-25 years.

Major supporters include A Glimmer of Hope Austin, Brown State of Mind, the City of Austin, and many young artists and creatives that support the cause.
