Wild Magnolias: A Taste of New Orleans in the Heart of Pflugerville

From New Orleans to Austin on East 11th St, and now out to Pflugerville, Wild Magnolias Creole & Southern Comfort restaurant has found its home.

Owner & Wild Magnolias Head Chef, Darrell Owens, remains composed as he opened his doors on November 5th, at 11 am. “I won’t believe it until I make my first order,” he says, days before his announced opening. Owen’s accent is still so distinct, one almost feels transported to the “Big Easy” moments after speaking with him. His jokes keep his conversations entertaining. But the story behind him is even more intriguing.

Forced out of New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina, he sought refuge in Central East Austin, particularly, Huston Tillotson’s student community. After years in the medical field, Darrell decided to leave his comfortable job to take a stab at entrepreneurship. With a leap of faith, he bet on himself, on his home and on his culture.

With the support of the East Austin community, his Omega Psi Phi, Inc fraternity brotherhood, the New Orleans Saints Extremists (Who Dat Nation) and people he attracted along the way, Darrell turned his family tradition of cooking with love into a successful food truck and has now made the successful transition to a brick-and-mortar location.

On Monday, November 5th, Owens opened the doors to his new location in  Pflugerville to some of the same familiar faces that supported him at his food truck in Austin’s Black Cultural District. Serving up crowd favorites like the crawfish nachos, gumbo, red beans & rice, and po’boys, it’s our hope that Wild Magnolias has found a new place to call home for a long time.

Wild Magnolias is located in Pflugerville at 5424 FM 1825 and they are open 11a – 8p every day except for Mondays and Saturdays.
