Well, well, well, Austin! Last Friday night was one for the books as we gathered to welcome the 2025 cohort of the African American Leadership Institute (AALI). Can you believe it’s been five years since I was part of the inaugural group back in 2021? Time flies when you’re busy making an innovative community impact on Central Texas!
The room was buzzing with excitement as we celebrated the potential and promise of this new group of exceptional leaders. It was a regular who’s who of Austin—city officials, community leaders, funders, and alumni all showed up to support AALI’s mission of building a stronger Black Austin community. As a friend and the loudest cheerleader for 212 Catalysts, Founder BiNi Scoor, and Program Director Courtney Bailey, I was ready to shout from the rooftops about the incredible work AALI is doing to enhance civic awareness and leadership opportunities in our city.
But the real star of the night was our new CEO, Daphne McDole. Let me tell you, Austin, we hit the jackpot with this one! With over 20 years of dedicated work in fundraising with the Boys & Girls Clubs of South-Central Texas and music education through Keys of Life, Daphne brings a unique perspective and skill set to AALI. Her accomplishments speak for themselves, securing over 2.5 million dollars in 2 years at Huston-Tillotson University and collaborating with C3 Presents to ensure the tradition of the Huston-Tillotson University Jazz Band and Choir on stage at the Austin City Limits Music Festival for years to come! Miss McDole also worked with the Moody Foundation to secure a financial gift to build student housing, in what will undoubtedly be the largest gift the university has ever received in their 150-year history; talk about making moves!

But Daphne isn’t just a fundraising powerhouse; she’s also a beloved figure in the Austin community. As a professional classical pianist and piano instructor, she’s touched the lives of hundreds of students over the years through her Keys of Life piano program. Austinites have been singing her praises for decades, and it’s easy to see why. Her passion for helping others and dedication to making a positive impact are unmatched.
Under Daphne’s leadership, I have no doubt that AALI will continue to thrive and make a meaningful difference in the lives of African American leaders and their communities. Her vision, dedication, and track record of success make her the perfect person to guide AALI into its next chapter.
As I reflect on the incredible growth of AALI over the past five years and the promising future ahead, I can’t help but feel a sense of pride and excitement. Being part of this organization has been a truly rewarding experience, and I look forward to seeing the impact that the 2025 cohort and Daphne will make in the years to come. I’ll keep drinking the Kool-Aid that AALI is serving because I believe in its mission and the power of community, leadership, and the boundless potential of the human spirit.
Last night’s celebration was a testament to the power of community, leadership, and the boundless potential of the human spirit. I look forward to seeing the impact that the 2025 cohort and Daphne will make in the years to come. Keep Austin leading, y’all!
