Art as Activism: CEO’s Unique Program Bridges Art and Social Justice

Equity Through Art. Empathy. Equity. Art.

I recently had the privilege of experiencing a truly one-of-a-kind journey through art and equity, guided by the remarkable Sabrina Phillips, CEO and Founder of Equity Through Art. From the moment we met, it was clear that Sabrina and I had connected spirits, our enthusiasm lighting up as we discussed the transformative power of her Art Through Equity approach.

Our day unfolded at the Blanton Museum, where we embarked on a profound journey of discovery. As we walked and talked, Sabrina’s visionary perspective illuminated the artworks around us, revealing how art has always been a powerful medium for expressing emotions, voicing opinions, and sparking conversations.

What struck me most was our shared understanding of art’s profound role within the Black community as a tool for social change. We discussed how artists across various mediums – visual artists, writers, musicians, and activists – have harnessed their talents to address pressing social issues and effect positive change in their communities.

The Equity Through Art program stands out as a testament to this power. Drawing from her rich tapestry of international teaching experience in Bangkok, Doha, London, and Egypt, just to mention a few.  She has crafted a program that transcends cultural boundaries. Through her unique lens, we explored how artists shape narratives and drive meaningful impact in the fight for justice, equality, and a better future.

As the day progressed, each piece we encountered served as a catalyst for deep reflection and insightful discussions. Sabrina’s unmatched ability to create a space that puts equity and inclusion at the forefront of the educational experience was evident  for me in every moment I spent with her. Her approach is not just about viewing art; it’s about using visual arts as a lens through which we can examine our shared human experience and the complex social issues that shape our world.

The impact of this incomparable experience was so profound that before the day ended, I had already enrolled in her second Cohort scheduled for January 2025, and I’m strongly considering traveling to London to view Tate Modern and the V& A Museum and more in March. Moreover, I made the decision to incorporate her Equity Through Art Workshop into the educational program of Saffron Trust Women’s Foundation. This addition will provide an invaluable and unparalleled experience for the families we serve, offering a unique way to process experiences, build empathy, and engage with important social issues through the power of art.

As I reflect on this day, I’m filled with gratitude for the opportunity to walk through this paradise of art and equity with Sabrina. Our connected spirits and shared passion for the transformative power of art made for an experience that was truly powerful and great. Her workshops and retreats are more than just educational experiences; they are transformative journeys that have the power to change perspectives and touch hearts in ways that nothing else can.
