The Austin Justice Coalition (AJC) is set to hold a significant press conference on February 5, 2025, at 10:00 AM at the Cherrywood Center in Austin, Texas. This event aims to shed light on Governor Greg Abbott’s ongoing attacks on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, the state’s increasing involvement in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids, and the pressing need to cultivate beloved communities amidst rising state oppression.
Governor Abbott’s administration has been characterized by a relentless campaign against DEI programs, which are crucial for fostering racial and social justice in Texas. By dismantling these initiatives, Abbott is perceived to be intentionally erasing the progress that has been made in creating inclusive environments in education and beyond. This effort is seen as part of a broader strategy that not only threatens marginalized communities but also seeks to silence their voices and histories.
The AJC highlights the dangerous implications of Abbott’s “war on DEI”, emphasizing that Texas must continue to advocate for inclusive policies that uplift all communities. The organization argues that the state’s complicity in ICE raids further exacerbates the challenges faced by immigrant communities, as these operations often lead to family separations and instill a pervasive culture of fear. The impact of these actions is felt deeply, as they contribute to the criminalization and destabilization of vulnerable populations.

In response to these pressing issues, the AJC is calling upon advocates, organizers, and community members to unite in solidarity. The press conference will address the urgent need to invest in and protect “beloved communities”—spaces where individuals from diverse backgrounds can live with dignity and security, free from state-sponsored harm and oppression. Chas Moore, Founder and Organizing Director of the Austin Justice Coalition, articulated the coalition’s stance, stating, “Governor Abbott’s war on DEI, his alignment with ICE, and his broader assault on decency are not just policies—they are a direct threat to the humanity and dignity of working-class communities in Texas.”
Now, more than ever is the time for us to build and defend beloved communities . . .
Moore further emphasized the importance of building and defending beloved communities, asserting that these spaces are rooted in justice and empowerment. “We refuse to let that happen. Now, more than ever is the time for us to build and defend beloved communities—places rooted in justice, where our people are protected, empowered, and unapologetically seen. Texas deserves better, and we won’t stop fighting until we get it,” he affirmed.
The AJC encourages community leaders, activists, allies, and all concerned Texans to attend this critical event. The press conference will provide an opportunity for media representatives to engage with the coalition and ask questions following the prepared remarks.
