On January 8, 2024, the Housing Authority of the City of Austin (HACA) will host a significant event that marks a new chapter in affordable housing initiatives in the city. U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Acting Secretary Adrianne Todman will join local leaders and community members to celebrate the commencement of construction at Prospect Heights, an innovative project designed to provide affordable homeownership opportunities for low-income families.
Situated on the historic grounds of Rosewood Courts—an area that has served the community since its establishment in 1939 under the 1937 Housing Act—Prospect Heights represents a collaborative effort between HACA and Austin Habitat for Humanity. This initiative aims to empower first-time homebuyers by making homeownership accessible to those who may have previously thought it unattainable.
The ceremonial wall-raising event, scheduled for 10 a.m. at 1146 Poquito Street, will kick off the construction of 12 townhome-style homes. This milestone not only signifies the start of a new housing development but also embodies a commitment to revitalizing the community while honoring its rich history. The project is strategically located adjacent to the new Pathways at Rosewood Courts, which is set to introduce 184 affordable rental homes to the area by the end of 2025.
