Walking through the doors of the Austin Convention Center, cosplayer Chelsea and I were instantly taken on a nostalgic journey down Memory Lane, seeing favorites from our childhood to present day. There was Carmen Sandiego, Doodle Bob, a Nanami Kento around every corner, and even A Pimp Named Slickback.
This was our first cosplay convention. So, we were both nervous but excited. Don’t misunderstand, though. Cosplay is just one of the facets of Dream Con. Anime is king. Gaming is another staple, and a film festival was also introduced this year. Plus, there’s several panels to help aspiring content creators, writers, artists, etc., to hone their skills and get to the next level in their career.
Everyone was so welcoming, and even the top creators and celebrity guests were down to earth. Some were even walking through the sea of attendees without being overrun with picture and autograph requests.
I was able to interview some amazing talent over the three day convention as well, from local and in-state personalities to national musicians and comedians. I spoke with streamer Pink Sakura, musician Irv Da Phenom as heard on Deadpool and Wolverine, gamer and commentator Flexmasterflash, and Dream Con host Miss Jourdy. I chatted with YouTuber and podcaster Erik Threet. We also attended the press interviews for Tony Statovci and KevOnStage.
Now, since the convention had such a family reunion vibe, this was NOT the community to try and come for. Take it from streamer Yusuf who decided to use his first visit to the convention to make fun of the attendants “for content”. He’s still getting roasted on all social media platforms weeks after the event has ended.
After being denied access as featured guests by similar conventions, social media influencers RDCWorld decided to create their own convention to bring together like-minded individuals to enjoy and celebrate multiple interests including pop culture, comics, art, cosplay, music, and much more. “This convention will be for everyone whether you’re Black, white, brown, purple, or green like Piccolo.”-RDCWorld
We had an amazing time, had the chance to fangirl, and took pictures with new friends who appreciated our cosplay and vice versa. I will say, it’s a true confidence boost when someone approaches you to compliment your gear.10/10, DEFINITELY recommend. I’d attend again in a heartbeat.
Due to the Austin Convention Center being torn down for expansion next year, Dream Con will be held in a different city. Stay tuned to find out what city will be the lucky host.
