The George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Genealgy Center, a cornerstone of Austin’s African American community since 1933, is embarking on an ambitious expansion project that promises to transform this beloved cultural institution into a world-class facility for future generations.

Phase 1 of the expansion project, estimated to cost $10-$12 million and approved by the Austin City Council in 2021, represents a significant commitment in preserving and celebrating Black history and culture in Central Texas. This expansion is broken down in 3 phases and is estimated to cost $57 million in total. This transformation will enhance the museum’s ability to serve as a vital community hub while honoring its historic role in East Austin.

KEY FEATURES OF THE EXPANSION:

  • New Exhibition Spaces
The expansion will dramatically increase the museum’s capacity to showcase both permanent and traveling exhibitions. These state-of-the-art galleries will provide proper environmental controls and security systems, allowing the Carver to host major exhibitions from national museums and better preserve its own growing collection.
  • Enhanced Community Areas
Recognizing the Carver’s role as a gathering place, the project includes expanded community spaces that could be designed for workshops, lectures, performances, and cultural events. These flexible spaces could accommodate everything from youth programs to senior activities, strengthening the museum’s role as a multigenerational community center.
  • Improved Accessibility
The renovation prioritizes universal design principles, ensuring the facility is welcoming and accessible to visitors of all abilities. This includes new accessible outdoor features, improved way-finding, and modern amenities that meet or exceed ADA standards.
  • Sustainable Design
The expansion incorporates green building practices and energy-efficient systems, demonstrating environmental stewardship while reducing long-term operating costs. These sustainable features align with Austin’s climate goals while creating a healthier environment for visitors and staff.
