In an eagerly anticipated match that kicked off a seven-match homestand, Huston-Tillotson University’s volleyball team welcomed Texas Lutheran University to their court on October 2, 2024. Although the evening did not end in the Rams’ favor, the spirited contest showcased the determination and skill of both teams.

The visiting Bulldogs from Texas Lutheran wasted no time in asserting their dominance, taking the match in straight sets with scores of 25-8, 25-14, and 25-17. This victory improved their season record to 10-5 while highlighting their capability on the court as a member of NCAA Division III.

HT, fresh off a three-match winning streak in the Red River Athletic Conference, wasn’t without its standout performances. Team leader Kennedy White shone brightly with eight kills, demonstrating her attacking prowess and keeping the pressure on the Bulldogs’ defense. Fellow teammate Chloe Gaytan also made significant contributions with six kills, while Elaina Spriggins set up her teammates effectively, dishing out 10 assists throughout the match.

Defense played a pivotal role for the Rams as well, with Danelle McCullough leading the effort by securing eight digs. Aniyah Asberry also made her mark defensively, thwarting six attacks from the Bulldogs. This defensive tenacity, while admirable, was challenged by Texas Lutheran’s powerful offensive display.

The highlight of the match came in the third set, which proved to be the most competitive of the night. The teams battled fiercely, exchanging four ties and three lead changes as they vied for control. For much of the set, the score remained close, with the teams within three points of each other. However, the Bulldogs came back with a crucial late-game surge, scoring four consecutive points to establish a commanding 21-15 lead. They ultimately maintained their advantage, closing out the set and sealing the match at 25-17.

Texas Lutheran’s Brylie Nedd was a standout player, leading her team with a remarkable performance that included 12 kills and an impressive .444 hitting percentage. Her ability to find openings in the Rams’ defense was instrumental to the Bulldogs’ success and provided a blueprint for effective play that kept HT on the defensive throughout the match.

Looking ahead, Huston-Tillotson is determined to bounce back. The Rams are set to return to action on Friday, hosting Texas A&M–Texarkana for their next challenge in the RRAC. With the first serve scheduled for 6 p.m., the team is eager to use their home-court advantage to regain momentum and continue their quest in the conference.

As the match against Texas Lutheran draws to a close, there’s no doubt that the Rams will take valuable lessons forward, allowing their resilience and teamwork to shine as they gear up for the upcoming weekend matches. Fans can expect an exhilarating atmosphere as HT looks to turn the tide and add to their wins in the crucial homestand ahead.
