Metropolitan AME Church’s 2025 Men’s Day is Sunday, February 23, at 10:00 am.

This annual event not only celebrates the achievements of men in the church but also serves as a reminder of the vital role they play in shaping a supportive and faith-driven community. The congregation of Metropolitan AME Church looks forward to coming together to honor these individuals and to inspire one another to continue growing in faith.

A Rich Legacy of Faith and Community

As the congregation gathers for Men’s Day, it also reflects on 153 years of faith, resilience, and service. Metropolitan AME Church, located at 1101 E. 10th Street, traces its roots back to 1870, when a group of devoted Black men and women came together in the home of Tempie Washington to worship. This moment marked the birth of African Methodism in Austin, Texas, setting the foundation for a spiritual and educational movement that continues today.

The church’s commitment to education quickly took shape with its founding of Paul Quinn College in 1872, just two years after the church’s inception. Originally established in Waco, the college later moved to Dallas, Texas, further expanding opportunities for academic growth.

By 1873, under the leadership of Minister Frank Green, the congregation secured its first official church building on the east side of San Antonio Street, an area designated for churches and schools in Austin’s original city plans. Over the years, the church underwent significant enhancements, including the addition of a slate roof in 1883, making it the first African American-owned building in the area with such a feature.

Metropolitan’s leadership has been instrumental in shaping its growth, with pastors like Rev. Edward Hammett, Rev. Jackson, Rev. W.H. Ross, and Rev. Abraham Grant leaving lasting impacts. In 1986, under Rev. Dr. David Harris, the church proudly unveiled its Historical Marker, and in 1987, the City of Austin designated its property as a historical site.

Moving Forward with Faith

Through continuous expansion and renovation, Metropolitan AME Church remains a pillar of faith and service now under the leadership of Pastor N Jordan Mkwanazi since 2004. With over forty pastors having led the church throughout its history, each has contributed to its mission of unity, worship, and community upliftment.

As Metropolitan AME Church presents Men’s Day 2025, it celebrates not only the achievements of its male leaders and community members but also its deep-rooted legacy. Anchored in history and looking toward the future, the church remains a beacon of faith, education, and empowerment for generations to come.
