Patrick Mahomes, the reigning Super Bowl Champion, and MVP, is possibly en route to his third consecutive Super Bowl win, which would make the Chiefs the first NFL team to have a Super Bowl threepeat. Mahomes currently has three Super Bowl wins underneath his belt in four appearances.
The Kansas City Chiefs have been dominating the league year after year despite losing one of their best weapons, wide receiver Tyreek Hill, to the Miami Dolphins a few years ago. The team’s roster has slowly deteriorated since, but the high-level play from Mahomes has kept the Chiefs afloat.
So can Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs become a dynasty? That depends on how you define the word dynasty in football. In the NBA (National Basketball Association), a dynasty is categorized as winning over an extended period of time. Let’s take a look at the Golden State Warriors. The Warriors have won four NBA titles from the 2014-2015 season to the 2021-2022 season. None of those titles were consecutive for three years, but the Warriors are considered a dynasty because they won four titles in eight years.
Utilizing the same premise, some consider the Chiefs a dynasty already. Ever since Mahomes became the starter for the Chiefs in 2018, they have been to four Super Bowls in seven years, winning three of those. This is quite unheard of in today’s football era because of the increased talent across the league. The Chiefs had a questionable at best roster last year but dominated the regular season with an 11-6 record. This was enough to win the AFC West division and garner a playoff spot in the Wildcard round.
In the Wildcard, the Chiefs would match up with an old friend in Tyreek Hill. The Miami Dolphins were hot and looking to take down the reigning Champs. Mahomes and the Chiefs would defeat the Dolphins 26-7. In this game, Mahomes would connect with his new weapon at wide receiver, rookie Rasheed Rice for 130 receiving yards and a touchdown. In the following game, the Chiefs would meet up with a familiar foe, the Buffalo Bills. The Mahomes and Josh Allen rivalry did not disappoint obviously. This game was won 27-24 in favor of the Chiefs.
The Bills, who finished 11-6 in the regular season, were looking to clinch their first Super Bowl in team history. However, Mahomes is a tree stump that the Bills can’t overcome in the playoffs. He passed for 215 yards and two touchdowns to seal the deal. At this point in the season, the Chiefs roster-wise, did not stack up against any of their opponents, but their chemistry boasted their chances of winning. In the AFC Conference Championship game, the Chiefs would match up with the red-hot Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens finished the regular season 13-4 and were looking dominant.
However, the Ravens and the Chiefs game was a defensive stalemate. The Ravens made strides throughout the game but would be shut down time after time by the Chiefs’ defense. The Chiefs would narrowly defeat the Ravens 17-10 which moves them to the Super Bowl for the second time in two years. However, like the previous three teams they faced, the gauntlet was not over.
The Chiefs would go against another familiar face in the Super Bowl, the San Fransico 49ers. The Chiefs defeated the 49ers in 2020 in Super Bowl 54 to secure Mahomes first Super Bowl win. Mahomes looked to defeat the 49ers again, but there was one problem, the 49ers were the best team in football. The 49ers had playmakers on both sides of the ball who were hungry to get their revenge on Mahomes.
The game was another defensive stalemate until Mahomes pulled off one of the most impressive game-winning drives of all time. Mahomes would put the team on his back to deliver the final blow to the 49ers to defeat them once again to secure another title in back-to-back years. Mahomes finished the contest with 333 passing yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.
After his playoff stint, there isn’t much doubt that Mahomes and the Chiefs can become a dynasty regardless of how it is defined.
