Ethan (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), Isaac (Seth Rogen) and Chris (Anthony Mackie) have been friends since childhood, and for a decade, their yearly Christmas Eve reunion has been an annual night of debauchery and hilarity. Now that they’re entering adulthood, the tradition is coming to an end, and to make it as memorable as possible, they set out to find the Nutcracka Ball – the Holy Grail of Christmas parties.
Seth Rogan has had some really funny movies and then a few that are just so-so; but then there is THE NIGHT BEFORE, a very fun, funny, and often heartwarming film that I will have to say is one of the best comedies of the year. The combination of Levitt, Rogan, and Mackie is like comedy gold and each one brings a different kind of funny to the table. Rogan steals the movie in a big way when his pregnant wife gives him not only the go ahead to live it up one more night before settling down to family life, but also gives him a variety of drugs she buys online for him to use; this lends to some of the movies funniest scenes, and where I may have actually spit soda through my nose laughing so hard.
Great movie, but this IS NOT for kids, it is VERY adult and deals with ADULT situations; so keep that in mind.
