The Saga Continues: Jussie’s Legal Battle Gets Another Chapter

Actor Jussie Smollett leaves Leighton Criminal Courthouse after his court appearance in Chicago on March 14, 2019. Smollett stands accused of arranging a homophobic, racist attack against himself in an attempt to raise his profile because he was dissatisfied with his salary on the Fox television drama "Empire."

Former “Empire” star Jussie Smollett just caught another L in his ongoing legal drama. The Illinois Supreme Court said “nah” to his appeal, keeping his conviction for that wild 2019 hate crime hoax that had everybody talking.

Real talk? The court wasn’t having any of what Jussie was trying to serve. They shut down his appeal faster than your auntie closes the front door on Halloween when she runs out of candy.

Remember the tea? Our boy got caught up claiming he was jumped by some MAGA-hat wearing attackers in downtown Chicago, only for investigators to flip the script and say he orchestrated the whole thing. The end result? A conviction on five counts of felony disorderly conduct for filing false police reports.

The price tag for this mess? 150 days behind bars (though he only served six after posting bond), 30 months probation, and having to come up off $120,000 in restitution to the city of Chicago. Plus another $25K in fines for good measure.

Jussie’s legal team tried to argue that this was double jeopardy since he’d already given up that $10K bond money and did some community service. But the justices weren’t trying to hear all that.

What’s next for Jussie? Looking like he might have to face the music and finish serving that time. Meanwhile, this whole situation continues to be a cautionary tale about keeping it real and the consequences of doing too much.

Stay tuned, family. Something tells us this story ain’t quite finished yet.
