The University of Texas Women’s Basketball team has made headlines this week, being named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) National Team of the Week after an impressive 3-0 record. The Longhorns showcased their prowess on the court with victories over three formidable opponents, including two ranked teams, solidifying their status as a powerhouse in collegiate basketball.

The week kicked off with a stunning performance against No. 8 Maryland in the Coretta Scott King Classic, where Texas dominated with an 89-51 victory. This win marked the largest margin of victory over a top-10 team in the program’s history, a testament to the Longhorns’ skill and determination. Following this impressive start, Texas returned home to face the No. 17 Tennessee Lady Volunteers. In a tightly contested match, the Longhorns emerged victorious with an 80-76 win, showcasing their resilience and ability to perform under pressure.

The Longhorns continued their winning streak on the road, traveling to Ole Miss for a nail-biting encounter that concluded with a 61-58 victory. This trio of wins not only highlights the team’s talent but also their capacity to compete against some of the best teams in the nation.

Key players contributed significantly to the Longhorns’ success. Taylor Jones was recognized as the SEC Player of the Week, demonstrating her exceptional performance throughout the games. She recorded her sixth double-double of the season against Tennessee, finishing with 21 points and 14 rebounds. Her consistent scoring and rebounding have been vital to the team’s success.

She led the Longhorns with an impressive 28 points against Maryland, shooting an efficient 13-of-19 from the field. Booker’s offensive prowess continued against Tennessee, where she scored 26 points, further solidifying her role as a key contributor. In the game against Ole Miss, she added 12 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocked shots, demonstrating her versatility and defensive capabilities. Booker’s ability to make crucial steals in the closing moments of the games against Tennessee and Ole Miss showcased her clutch performance under pressure.

The Longhorns’ remarkable 20-2 start to the season is their best since the 2015-16 campaign, reflecting the hard work and dedication of both the players and coaching staff. Head coach Vic Schaefer has a proven track record, guiding his teams to 20 or more wins for 12 consecutive seasons, and this year appears to be no exception.

As the Longhorns continue their season, they look forward to their next challenge against Missouri, set to take place on Thursday, January 30, at 8:00 p.m. CT on the SEC Network. With their current momentum and the recognition from the USBWA, the Longhorns are poised to make a significant impact as they aim for further success in the season ahead.

The recognition as the USBWA National Team of the Week not only highlights the accomplishments of the Texas Women’s Basketball team but also sets the stage for what promises to be an exciting remainder of the season. Fans and supporters alike eagerly anticipate the Longhorns’ next steps as they strive for excellence on the court.
