Aside from Black-History related programming, February is normally one of the quieter months of the year as far as events and things to do in Austin. However, Black Austin is kicking off 2019 the right way! February is packed with things to do for the culture and more!
Firstly, congratulations to Rose Smith of Black Women in Business, being recognized for her works with small and minority businesses here in the greater Austin Area. She’s continuing to put on for the culture as she will host Austin’s Inaugural Black Business Week February 11th – 15th. It’s a great opportunity to frequent your favorite Black-owned establishments!
Looking for something fun and different to do on Valentine’s Day? Wild Magnolias Creole Restaurant is hosting a 90’s Karaoke and Comedy Jam hosted by Austin’s Milka Miller and Dallas comedian Dexter Givens. It will be light, fun, in the normal crazy Wild Magnolias fashion. For $50, you can purchase a 3-course dinner for two, drinks, participate in the Karaoke and enjoy the Comedy Show. Tickets are available on Eventbrite.
Want to support the community? soulciti and Soul Food Truck Fest have partnered with Wild Magnolias and Mark Henry for the Gumbo Smackdown! Mark Henry, former World’s Strongest man, Olympic medalist, and current WCW wrestler, has challenged Wild Magnolias Creole Restaurant to a Gumbo Cookoff.
On Saturday, February 16th, from 1 pm – 4pm, there will be music, judges, vendors, and lots of food. It’s only $3 to taste both Gumbos and cast your vote. They’ll also have an awesome group of judges comprised of chefs and pillars in the community to lend their input and support. A portion of the proceeds will go to Mark Henry’s StrongKids youth foundation. Come out, celebrate, and eat some good gumbo!
Lastly, the Mike Frames Swerve Fashion Show is the place to be on Saturday, February 16th from 8 pm – midnight. Mike James Jr, an Austin- based artist and entrepreneur, will be debuting his Eyewear collection on some of Austin’s most dynamic and engaging models as well as providing a live performance and food catered by Wild Magnolias Restaurant.
