Renaissance Man Deon Cole is Coming to Austin

You may know him from the Old Spice commercials, the TV show Blackish, or from his days on BET’s ComicView, but while having a 20-plus-year career and finding new ways to transform, there ain’t nothing old about Deon Cole.

soulciti had the opportunity to speak with Cole as he heads to Austin for one night only, November 24, at ACL Live at the Moody Theater, to perform his new special, My New Normal, but it’s not just his jokes that people want to see.

Of course, Deon is one of the few comedians who supplies hard laughs yet easy looks, and we know our majority female demographic would line up at his locker if they could. However, there is more than meets the eye—and the stage—when it comes to Cole.

I see it as transforming and pushing myself to new limits through my art

Versatile is an understatement. That’s what you would call a reversible coat, not a comedian who has a top-rated drama series, one of the largest commercial contracts, and “plays music” for the love of it in his spare time. As someone who watched his comedy live and witnessed his surprise DJ set in Atlanta, and as a fan of the arts, I gave him his flowers for all his abilities. His humility set the record straight, “I play music because it’s something I love to do, but I wouldn’t disrespect the hard work of DJ’s”, Deon remarked. His versatility lies in challenging himself to find new ways to create. “I see it as transforming and pushing myself to new limits through my art”.

Deon Cole headed to Austin on Nov 24 to ACL Live.

Not only is challenging himself a part of Cole’s fabric, but so is creating opportunities for the artists he works with, which makes him cut from a different cloth.  For those who don’t know, he comes from one market that produces some of the best comedians in the country: Chicago, IL.  Not only does the city have amazing food, but there is a buffet of actually funny comedians out of that city as well. Deon is among amazing company with Lil Rell, Corey Holcomb, DeRay Davis, and Sheryl Underwood, all from Chicago, but he is still one of the few comedians who is a quadruple threat in his career, being a comedian, writer, producer, actor, and aspiring DJ.

Speaking of the buffet, Austin restaurants were the one thing Deon mentioned being excited about. Every time he visits the Live Music Capital, there’s a new amazing spot to try. He specifically said, “I didn’t know there was as much food as Austin has restaurants” . . . so shout out to all the souls in Austin that prepare and create amazing food concepts!
