Red River Cultural District‘s Free Week Returns January 2024

The Red River Cultural District is proud to announce the highly anticipated return of the local nonprofit’s multi-genre, multi-venue, and admission-free winter music festival, Free Week, to downtown Austin on January 5–6.

Austinites are encouraged to kick off the new year with two back-to-back nights of free performances from dozens of local music acts. Downtown Austin will once again be transformed into the Red River Cultural District’s Free Week festival footprint, showcasing over ten popular live music venues. The current lineup of local music venues set to participate in Free Week 2024 is listed below in A-Z order:

  • 13th Floor
  • Barbarella
  • Cheer Up Charlies
  • Chess Club
  • Creek & Cave
  • Elysium
  • Empire Control Room & Garage
  • Flamingo Cantina
  • Mohawk
  • Stubb’s Bar-B-Q
  • Swan Dive
  • Valhalla
  • Vaquero Taquero

Founded 20 years ago in 2003, Free Week began at the legendary Emo’s original location near 6th and Red River Street to keep the lights on and staff working during the historically slower winter months. What started as a one-venue event grew into a movement over the past two decades, with music venues nationwide now participating in the wintertime event. Red River Cultural District currently serves as a principal organizer locally with its multi-venue downtown festival, although many venues across Austin regularly participate each winter.

Free Week in Austin now serves as a compliment to the local nonprofit’s other annual admission-free music festival, Hot Summer Nights, which takes place each summer. Collectively, tens of thousands of local residents and hundreds of local bands participate in these two downtown music fests each year in an effort to support, uplift, and preserve Austin’s music economy.

Stay tuned as the new music lineup will be revealed soon, along with a new schedule full of food and drink promotions from some of the most popular restaurants, bars, and nightclubs found across the District.
