Fellow movie-goers: Great script, could have been a little funnier, but it is worth the watch.
Here’s the premise: Guy Carter (Jason Biggs) is an award-winning graduate student of architecture. He’s got a beautiful wife and a baby on the way, but he does not have a job. The problem? Guy has been trying to find work in his field for a year with no luck, at wit’s end, his wife Anne finds him a job as a ‘driver’ on Craigslist. Guy shows up for the interview thinking he’ll be delivering pizzas, but quickly realizes it’s a job driving prostitutes. With money too scarce to turn down, he goes for it- which is where he meets Nikk (Janet Montgomery), the tough-as-nails, unapologetic sex worker, and her two hilarious and foul-mouthed cohorts, Jaxi and Fallon (Bria L. Murphy and Ashley Tisdale.)
Based loosely on a true story, writers and directors Lisa Addario and Joe Syracuse turn in a pretty solid script with plenty of heart. It’s a good story, funny (although could have been a little funnier), moves along rather nicely, and at the core has a heart for the main characters. The cast did a decent job, I was shocked to see Disney good girl Ashley Tisdale in a VERY adult role, but she showed she could hold her own against American Pie alum Jason Biggs.
Amateur night is worth seeing, it won’t be a box office smash and I would actually wait to see it at a matinee, unless it’s a girlfriend’s night out or a date night, then pay full price. Remember that this is an “R” rated movie about prostitutes, so just know what you are getting into before you go.
