In 2018, Tanya Walker, an outdoor enthusiast, established the Black and brown women’s empowerment organization Black Women Who Kayak (BWWK), to see more women who look like her doing the activities she loves.
By partnering with local boating organizations and clubs, BWWK was teaching and encouraging women to kayak. However, the organization quickly expanded far beyond kayaking, providing activities like golf, rowing, sailing, fencing, rock wall climbing, camping, etc. They knew a name change was needed to better represent the community. So, Tanya dropped the K, and the organization became Black Women Who.
“We aim to empower black and brown women and children by placing them in spaces where they are seldom seen.” Tanya Walker, Founder
Black Women Who‘s mission is to inspire and educate these women and children and to allow them to leave a lasting impact on their generation and future generations.
Thanks to the support of countless donors and the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS), Black Women Who sent two ladies on an 8-day backpacking expedition in the Alaska Tekki Mountains in 2022. This opportunity was a life-changing experience for both of them. In 2023, the organization sent two more ladies on a 14-day horse-packing expedition in the Wyoming Red Desert, with all expenses paid.

This opportunity will give the chosen women a chance to experience the natural beauty of the park and create memories that will last a lifetime.
We believe that every woman deserves the chance to explore and discover the world around them, regardless of their financial background.
To provide this experience, Black Women Who needs $7,000 and is asking the community for donations towards that amount that will significantly ensure that the two participants selected have a successful expedition. By contributing to this cause, you will cover all necessary expenses, such as lodging, travel, transportation, food, and emergencies.
“We believe that every woman deserves the chance to explore and discover the world around them, regardless of their financial background. We are proud to make this possible through our mission, and we invite you to join us in supporting Black Women Who as we work towards empowering, educating, and inspiring women and children to create a brighter future for all.” Tanya exclaimed.
